Welcome to Istanbul: The heart of history, culture, and innovation

Istanbul is a fascinating historical city connecting Europe and Asia, and blending the cultures of East and West. As the only city in the world on two continents, Istanbul has been a center of trade, culture, and innovation for thousands of years.

A city with a rich history

Istanbul’s history dates back over 2,500 years. Known as Byzantium in its earliest days, the city later became Constantinople, the heart of the Byzantine Empire, and finally Istanbul, the jewel of the Ottoman Empire. Each era has left its mark, creating a city that is both a living museum and a vibrant, modern metropolis.

Visitors can immerse themselves in the grandeur of Istanbul’s historic landmarks. The Hagia Sophia, a masterpiece of Byzantine architectureis a symbol of Istanbul’s resilience and transformation for nearly 1,500 years. The Topkapi Palace, once the home of Ottoman sultans, offers a glimpse into the opulence and intrigue of imperial life. Nearby, the Blue Mosque enchants visitors with its delicate minarets and stunning tilework, while the Basilica Cistern takes you underground to explore the ingenuity of ancient engineering.

The Grand Bazaar, one of the largest and oldest covered markets in the world, is a treasure trove of goods and a vibrant testament to Istanbul’s role as a global trading hub. The Bosphorus Strait, which divides the city into its European and Asian sides, provides stunning views and serves as a reminder of Istanbul’s strategic importance throughout history.

A vibrant modern metropolis

Today, Istanbul is much more than its historical landmarks. It is Turkey’s largest city and economic powerhouse, with a population of over 15 million people. The city is a hub for innovation, education, and culture, attracting students, researchers, and professionals all around the world.

Istanbul’s vibrant neighbourhoods each offer their own unique charm. Beyoğlu, with its bustling Istiklal Avenue, is the cultural heart of the city, home to theatres, art galleries, and lively cafes. Kadıköy, on the Asian side, combines a bohemian vibe with a rich culinary scene, while Levent and Maslak showcase Istanbul’s modern skyline and business districts.

Food lovers will also enjoy Istanbul’s diverse cuisine, which blends flavors from the Mediterranean, Middle East, and Central Asia. From traditional street foods like simit to elaborate Ottoman dishes, there is something for every taste.

Istanbul: A center for knowledge and collaboration

As a leading hub for education and research, Istanbul is home to numerous prestigious institutions, including Istanbul Technical University (ITU). Founded in 1773, ITU is one of the world’s oldest technical universities and a leader in fields such as engineering, architecture, and environmental sciences.

Istanbul is a perfect host city of AGRO’2025, an international symposium focused on environmental engineering and sustainability. The event will bring together experts and professionals to address global challenges like water and wastewater management in agro industries, climate change, waste valorization applications, circular economy and life cycle assessment.

An unforgettable experience

Beyond the symposium, AGRO’2025 participants will have the chance to explore Istanbul’s many wonders. Walk through the historic streets of Sultanahmet, sail across the Bosphorus to enjoy the stunning views of the city’s skyline, or take in the sunset from the Galata Tower. For those seeking a more modern experience, Istanbul’s contemporary art galleries, music festivals, and vibrant nightlife offer endless entertainment.

Istanbul’s charm lies not only in its landmarks but also in its people. The city is renowned for its warm hospitality, where guests are treated not just as visitors but as friends.
